Students attending high school in the Newport-Mesa Unified School District must complete the Experiential Learning Project (ELP) to graduate from high school (Board Policy 6146.1).

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District is committed to involving its students and faculty in our community through the implementation of the Experiential Learning Project (ELP) for all students in grades 9 - 12.

The opportunity to serve those in our community contributes not only to the community, but also to the growth of each individual who participates. It is important to note that many colleges and universities are looking for strong participation in the community. The ELP graduation requirement will provide the opportunity for all NMUSD high school students to have a positive impact in our communities.

Please contact your school site for more information.

California state law, the California Healthy Youth Act (AB 329), was passed in 2016 and requires that comprehensive sexual health education and HIV prevention education be provided to students at least once in middle school and once in high school, starting in grade 7.  NMUSD elementary students do not receive comprehensive sex education instruction.

Visit the Comprehensive Sexual Health Education website for more information.

Grade 6-8: Illustrative Math

Grade 6-8 Family Resources

In August 2017, Newport-Mesa Unified School District (NMUSD) began the process of evaluating and piloting new math instructional materials for sixth through eighth grade. Through the seven month teacher-driven pilot process, teachers and staff identified Illustrative Mathematics as the comprehensive set of sixth through eighth grade math instructional materials for NMUSD students which was approved by the Board of Education on June 12, 2018.

Illustrative Mathematics materials are available for public review on the
Kendall Hunt website.

The Illustrative Mathematics (IM) high school materials are available through three IM certified publishers. All publishers provide the same Illustrative Mathematics content. While this link makes the content available for viewing through Kendall Hunt, we are working with staff to determine which publisher will best meet the needs of the NMUSD students and staff. Illustrative Mathematics Materials for Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II
